Oscar Martinez Jr. of Lovington NM left this world to be with his Heavenly Father on November 17, 2017 after a three year struggle with mesothelioma. He was surrounded by his adoring family. Oscar was born on November 04, 1954 in Kermit, TX to Oscar Martinez Sr. and Gloria Martinez (Bernard). His father has preceded him in death but his mother survives him.

As a child growing up in the west Oscar had a fascination and love for sports; especially for baseball. His interest sprouted from his father who fostered the care and meticulous nature required to not only be good at the game but to excel. His skilled garnered him a place in Major League Baseball playing short-stop on a professional level, but after the discovery that with his wife was pregnant with their first child Monica he made the hard decision to leave baseball in order to work a stable job with a predicable paycheck. This was the fruit of maturity and fatherly dedication that as a man he bore the choice to choose family over self and a decision that he never regretted or looked back on.

Mr. Martinez was generous to a fault refusing to turn someone away who needed a hand rather than a handout. He was deeply devoted to his children and through he would try to be stern would always give in to his kids. His family was his world and he did everything possible to protect them. His legacy is in his family; though some may remember his skill at baseball and his ability to coach and teach, this will not be the legacy, but rather his family. The generosity that derived from his nature, the heart of service that came unsolicited, and the passion of family innately found in the unwavering and profoundly unconditional love to his children. This will be his legacy that will be seen in the bloodline of his family for generations to come.

Oscar is survived by his children Monica Martinez and her daughter Alyssa Salazar of Lovington NM, Oscar Martinez and Alyse of Roswell NM, Cameron Martinez of Lubbock TX, Jarred McMahon of Albuquerque NM, Irene Martinez, Daniel Martinez, and Paul Joseph Anthony Martinez; sister Nancy Madrid of Victoria TX; Brothers Raul Martinez of Victoria TX and Renee Martinez of Carlsbad NM; Mother Gloria B. Martinez of Victoria TX; and 12 Grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his Father Oscar Martinez Sr.
